Michigan native Tom Copps brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role as a math teacher at Bishop Stang. Before entering the world of education, Mr. Copps spent 12 years as a Coastal & Oceanographic Engineer, focusing on flood control, shore protection, and habitat restoration projects in estuaries along the East Coast.
His path eventually led him to a new passion—education. Since beginning his journey at Bishop Stang, he has enjoyed an 18-year career as a Spartan. In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Copps founded the Expedition Club at Bishop Stang, which organizes memorable hikes, including the popular Mount Monadnock trips. For him, watching students conquer their first challenging hike is an experience that sticks with him.
Beyond his work at school, Mr. Copps has several hobbies that reflect his adventurous spirit. From skiing to playing fiddle, Mr. Copps stays busy in New England. His true passion, however, is windsurfing, which he has been able to do in Michigan, Florida, and most often, in Buzzards Bay. While he enjoys the beauty of being on the water, he admits he’s not in it for the scenery— the power, speed, and agility of windsurfing keeps him coming back.
Reflecting on his time at Bishop Stang, Mr. Copps says that watching students grow—not only in their academic journeys but also in their confidence—is one of the most rewarding parts of his career. The dedication to his students has not gone unseen - Mr. Copps has had the yearbook dedicated to him by the Classes of 2011 and 2020. Whether on the hiking trails, in the classroom, or out on the water, Mr. Copps continues to inspire students with his enthusiasm, dedication, and love for learning.
